Stephan and Suhad's European Backpacking Trip September 98

Days Twenty and Twenty-one, Münich

In front of Paulaner's hall

We arrived in Münich that afternoon on an uneventful train trip. We were able to get back to Tintin's place fairly easily, as we were now fairly experienced with Münich and its metro/bus system. Tintin had to study for an exam the next day, so we decided to go to Oktoberfest by ourselves.

Drinking in Paulaner's hall

Oktoberfest is a huge drinking event with outdoor carnival rides, food, and lots and lots of beer. We both got smashed at the Paulaner's tent by drinking about 2 liters of beer each on empty stomachs. This happened because while we were wandering around, trying to figure out how the drinking was organized, we met some Germans who got us into their drinking group of Australians, Germans, and Italians. Needless to say we started drinking like crazy!

On the metro home

I'm not sure how we made it home among the drunken mass of people heading back to their homes and hotel rooms. There are many foreigners at Oktoberfest from all over the world. We made it back okay and I talked to Tintin for awhile before going to bed. The big news that night was that it looked like Germany would have a new chancellor.

With the family

The next morning Suhad and I visited my Aunt Betty and her family (Tintin's mother). We talked alot, ate alot, and waited as my cousins Patrick and Stefan came back from school, both of whom I hadn't seen for 12 years. When Tintin arrived we left for the Oktoberfest grounds where we bought a few momentos for our siblings and ourselves. This time we didn't drink anything, as we had to fly the next morning back to the States.

In the U-bahn

Uncle Gerhard, notice that I'm wearing your jacket in most of these photos!

The next day Christoph and Tintin took us to the airport, where they too, were looking for a place to go on vacation. Interestingly enough they picked Los Angeles, while we were headed back to Chicago. We arrived safely in Chicago and finally back to Milwaukee, home sweet home.

Germany has a new chancellor!

We both had a great time in our 3 weeks in Europe. We especially had a great time visiting my family in Germany. We both want to thank everyone for everything and hope that we will see everyone again sometime soon. Thanks!

Stephan and Suhad.
