Stephan and Suhad's European Backpacking Trip September 98

Day One, Chicago to Münich

Stephan at O'Hare Airport

Suhad and I had been planning a trip to Europe for several months. We had talked to family members, friends, and read travel books on various parts of Europe. We finally began our journey from Chicago's O'Hare Airport on British Airways on September 7, 1998.

The following is our web-based "scrapbook" of sorts, based on an actual scrapbook of our trip that Suhad labored over for weeks, and it's designed for all those friends and family members all over the world who haven't been able to see the photos from our trip.

If you would like to see a bigger picture of a photo on the page, just "click" on it. To get back to the original page, just push "back" on your browser. The quality of the photos depend upon the settings of the computer you are using. If you are using a computer with a smaller screen size, smaller desktop resolution, etc. the pictures may be jammed together, obscuring text. If this happens, simply "grab" the left side of the main "frame or window" and make the frame larger by pulling it to your left. This will enlarge the center frame and make the left-hand frame smaller, but you will be able to see all the text.

Our journey began the night of Tuesday, September 7, 1998. We stopped over in Heathrow Airport for a few hours before arriving in Münich around 2:30 in the afternoon. Because of our "red-eye" flight, we were both very tired when we arrived at Münich's airport.

Suhad and Tintin leaving U-bahn At Münich's airport we were supposed to meet my cousin Tintin. I didn't have much difficulty in spotting her at all. Her face was exactly as I remembered from the last time I had seen her 12 years ago, but she was much shorter than I had imagined her to be(Sorry Tintin :) I guess I must have grown alot in those 12 years!).

Political Rally at Marienplatz In our short afternoon and evening in Münich, Tintin took us by U-bahn to several places in Münich including Marienplatz, Koenigsplatz, and Leopoldstrasse.

At Marienplatz there was a rally for the Socialist Democratic Party (since we were in Germany just before the national elections), so we were unable to see much of the plaza.

Later that night I met my cousin Martje (Tintin's brother), again after not having seen him for over 12 years. He was much different than I had imagined, as he was much taller and darker than I had last seen him. Sausalito's with Tintin and Christoph We went out to dinner with him, Tintin, and her friend Christoph. Afterwards, we went to a Mexican restaurant called Sausalito's where we had some drinks.

We tried to see other parts of München's nightlife that night but it was much too early and we were both very tired, so we went back to Tintin's apartment where we were staying. Tintin's apartment

As she had just moved into her new apartment, she didn't have any furniture, but we improvised with inflatable mattresses.

Tintin, I hope you enjoy this page :)
